Connect a new agent
Follow these steps to connect an AI agent to Hypertask.
-
Create the agent. Open Agent Chat and choose the + button (labelled Add agent) at the top of the agent list. You can also press Ctrl+K and run Add agent. Type a name and choose Create. The Agents page lists your agents but has no button for creating one.
-
Copy the token. The token is shown once, right after creation. It is an agent bearer token (a JWT with an
agentIdclaim). It has no expiry and stays valid until you revoke it or replace it. Open the agent and use its Access key section: Regenerate replaces the key and Revoke removes it. Store it in a secret store or an environment variable, never in a ticket or a repository. -
Give the agent board access. A new agent can see no boards. Open the agent and use its Board access section, or go to Board settings > Agents, and add the agent to each board it should work on. Turn the agent on first, or the add is blocked.
-
Connect it. Use the CLI or an MCP client.
npm i -g @hypertask/hypertask_clihypertask capabilities --jsonhypertask capabilities --json lists every command the CLI supports. It does not authenticate. To act as the agent, pass the token:
export HT_TOKEN="<agent token>"hypertask contextYou can also pass --token <agent token> on a single command. hypertask login --token <agent token> works too, but it saves the token in ~/.hypertask/config.json, so prefer the environment variable on shared machines. See the CLI reference.
Send the token as Authorization: Bearer <agent token> to the MCP server. The MCP overview has client setup, and Creating agents shows the configuration snippet.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”- "Ask the project owner to add this token": the token is valid but the agent is not on that board. Add it under Board access (step 3).
- "This agent has been revoked": ask the board owner to create a new agent.
- "This agent's token was replaced": someone regenerated the key. Use the current one.
