# Skills

Create, manage, and import skills to organize your team's expertise and filter by them in queries and saved views.

import { Aside, Card, CardGrid, Tabs, TabItem, Steps } from '@astrojs/starlight/components';

Skills let you cluster related tasks, projects, and workflows around shared expertise. A skill can be anything: a domain, a technology, or a role. You can assign skills to people, filter any task list by skill, or use skills as metadata in saved views.

<Aside type="tip">
Use skills to surface specialized work: "React", "Schema Design", "Customer Research", or "Onboarding". Assign a skill to a person, and watch it surface in searches, assignments, and saved views.

## Save a workflow from AI chat

Ask chat to create a skill:

> Turn this session into a skill.

Or describe a workflow you want saved.
Review its name, slug, trigger, instructions and scope.
Choose personal scope or the current board.
Confirm the draft to save it.
Or request edits or reject the draft.
Edits need another preview before saving.
Nothing saves until you confirm the draft.
If the slug exists, approve an update instead.

Use `/slug` in chat, comments, or Task Writer.
Ctrl+J also supports saved skills.

## Create & assign skills

Skills are scoped to: personal (for you), project (for a board), or team (for all members of that team). When you assign a skill to a person, the assignment is also scoped to the skill’s scope, so a team-level skill appears in each project’s skill list.

<Steps>

1. **Open Skill management**
   - Use the **Ctrl+K** command palette and search for **"Skills"**, or go to the **Settings > Skills** page.

2. **Create a skill**
   - Click **New Skill**.
   - Give it a name (e.g., "Python" or "Design System").
   - Optionally add a description.
   - Choose the scope:
     - **Personal** — skill available only to you.
     - **Project** — skill available on a specific board/project.
     - **Team** — skill available to all members of your team, regardless of project.

3. **Assign a person**
   - On the skill card, click **Assign People**.
   - Search for a team member and add them.
   - Assignments are scoped: a personal skill assignment is only visible to you; a project assignment is only visible on that project’s board.

4. **Backlog/assign tasks by skill**
   - Filter a task list by skill using the skill picker.
   - Or assign a skill to a task to tag it for later filtering or reporting.
   - Saved views can also explicitly filter by skill.

</Steps>

## Run a skill from a ticket comment

Start writing a comment on any ticket. Type `/`, then choose an available skill. Use Enter or click to choose the skill.

The AI chat sidebar opens with its answer. The skill reads the ticket and your draft. Your comment stays editable and unposted.

### /prototype skill

You can now create a **/prototype** skill to define a shared prototype format across agents and collaboration tools. When someone inserts a prototype with this skill:

- The prototype becomes clickable in comments and AI chat.
- The default action is to open and display the prototype in the same context.
- The prototype’s slug is inserted into comments and prompts, making it easy to reference and reuse.
- If the prototype has its own action URL, the UI presents standard context‑appropriate actions:
  - **Comment composer**: click the prototype card to insert its slug; opening the prototype works the same way as other skills.
  - **AI chat**: pick /prototype from the command menu, then engage with the prototype in the same way you would any other skill.

<Aside type="tip">
Use the /prototype skill to streamline reference workflows: embed consistent embed URLs and referenceable slugs for MP4s, PNGs, and hosted prototypes. Agents and collaborators can open, inspect, and reference them without leaving their current flow.
</Aside>

### Use a skill when writing a new task

Press **Ctrl+J**, start your note with the skill's slug (for example `/deeper`), and send it. The AI writes the task using that skill, then opens the task with the AI chat.

As soon as you type `/`, a skill picker opens under your cursor, the same one the AI task writer shows. Keep typing to filter it, use the arrow keys to move, and press **Enter** or **Tab** to insert the skill. **Escape** closes only the picker, so your note stays open.

The chat's first message tells you which skill shaped the task and what changed compared with your note. It then lists concerns, ideas and follow-up questions for this task. Click a suggested question below the message to ask it in the same chat.

If no skill was used, or the skill was edited or removed after the task was written, the chat shows the usual short intro instead.

### Example agent use case

An agent that manages design reviews might:

- Use the /prototype skill to indicate designs under review.
- In a comment, insert the prototype slug to surface the linked prototype card.
- Ready the prototype for quick, context‑appropriate opening by teammates.

### Keyboard workflow

Quickly assign or filter by skill using your keyboard:

- **Ctrl+K** — Command palette; start typing **"Skill"** to find:
  - **Skills** — Open Skill management.
  - **Filter tasks by skill** — Pop up the skill selector.

- Use the skill picker in a board or task detail to click or navigate with arrow keys to select skills.

### Data model (for integrators)

- **Scope** — `personal` | `project` | `team`.
- A skill on a board applies only when that board is opened.
- A project skill applies across all boards in that project.
- A team skill applies automatically to all boards that your team owns.
